José Pedro Ferrão
Philanthropy Australia’s Conference Keynote Speaker in Ballarat
The man who is responsible for every United Way in the world outside the United States, took the time to visit us here in Ballarat and invest time in our community sector, business sector and our team at United Way Ballarat.
Ballarat Community Health hosted a forum for local not-for-profit organisations where José shared his understanding of global trends in the not-for-profit sector. The importance of organisations working together in both collaborative and collective frameworks was a theme that stood out in Jose’s presentation.
United Way Ballarat, teamed with The Committee for Ballarat to host a business leaders forum titled: ‘Corporate Social Responsibility – Why your business needs it’.
At the forum, José shared the global footprint of the United Way movement and the significant corporate partnerships it has. He then explained that United Ways across the world are customised to address local issues and local solutions but with the backing of a trusted world-leading voice.
A shift in approach
José introduced a fundamental shift in approach from ‘Corporate Social Responsibility’ to ‘Creating Shared Values’ and the concept that human success builds return.
In this approach, businesses become part of multi-stakeholder partnerships with not-for-profit, government and other businesses.
These partnerships set long-term goals to address defined local needs, which become core to the partners’ business plans. Partners have a direct engagement in local strategies.
In this approach, there is an understanding that societal value will enhance bottom-line success and that society and corporate performance are closely connected.
A reception and dinner was also held with the United Way Ballarat Board and Committees.
