National Volunteer Week – Flag Raising & Expo

Monday morning proved challenging weather-wise for those in attendance at the annual Flag Raising Ceremony, but despite the chill and the threatening clouds a crowd gathered opposite the Town Hall in Sturt Street and watched Cr Peter Innes and Geoff Sharp, CEO of United Way Ballarat raise the official Volunteer Flag.

After the briefest, record breaking speech by Cr Innes the large gathering dashed back to the warmth and cover of the Town Hall where presentations were made by Cr Innes and Cr Glen Crompton to the volunteer involving organisations in attendance.

Both Cr Innes and Geoff Sharp spoke highly of the role volunteers and volunteer organisations play in making our community such an amazing one.

A Volunteer Expo is on display all week, at both the Town Hall and at Central Square with images and stories of volunteers from across the spectrum of volunteering.  The stories were told in more depth in a Magazine distributed through The Courier on Monday, and further copies are available from our office.   You can also view the magazine on-line here:  Volunteering Magazine

The images are courtesy of Peter Kervarec of Ballarat Photography who volunteered his time and expertise to meet with each of the people and take their photo.  To acknowledge his support, he was presented with a gift of appreciation during the morning’s proceedings.
