Families of children with life-threatening conditions have so many hurdles to jump as they navigate their way through what others can only imagine.

Established in 1985 Very Special Kids is an unique community-based not for profit organisation that supports families throughout their experience of caring for children with life-threatening conditions, from diagnosis through to recovery or bereavement. Currently supporting over 500 families who have a child with a life-threatening condition and over 300 bereaved families throughout Victoria, our mission is to improve the quality of life for families of children with life-threatening conditions. Sadly most of these children will not reach adulthood and typically around 10% of the children we care for will loose their battle for life each year, approximately one each week.

The services Very Special Kids provide in the Ballarat region are vital for families caring for a child with a life-threatening condition.  As a result of the Ballarat program, these families gain the support needed to get through each day, week, month and year.  Very Special Kids allows them to  increase their self-confidence as a carer, provides a safe and supportive environment that facilitates communication and sharing, forms positive relationships and support networks with families in the region experiencing similar issues and decreases the feeling of isolation.  These benefits create a better, well supported Ballarat community.

The funding we provide for this program is generated from Workplace Giving programs.

This organisation has received funding from United Way Ballarat in the following years:

United Way Ballarat is working to advance the common good of our community by focusing on Education, Income and Health.  These are the building blocks for a good life—a quality education that leads to a stable job, enough income to support a family through retirement, and good health.  United Way Ballarat asks all the citizens of Ballarat and surrounding areas to do three things: GIVE – money and goods; ADVOCATE – on behalf of those who cannot; and VOLUNTEER – to invest time in our community More about United Way Ballarat
