No hole-in-one but a fantastic day for the community

The 16th Red Lion United Way Golf Classic will be remembered for many things. The weather couldn’t have been more ideal. The greens were in beautiful condition. The fairways were stunning, and golfers and non-golfers alike were keen to test their skill and enjoy the day… And enjoy it they did.

This year saw 27 teams enter the competition with several new faces in attendance. The team from The Bell Tower Inn/Worksecure was there for the first time and having had a fantastic day say they will definitely be back again. “We had a bunch of laughs along the way and an awesome day. Fantastic weather, fantastic company; win or lose it was just a great day” said Wayne Shrimpton from Worksecure.

Prior to teeing off, teams had the opportunity to bid for the privilege of having their own personal caddy for the day. Four-time club champion Luke Murray was suitably dressed in check pants and accompanied the team from Adroit Insurance after their successful bid. It was a very good buy too, the team won the day with the expert assistance they received.

The team from Bolton’s Office National were runners up and the team from Ballarat Toyota came third. This year saw several new ‘cups’ added to the program with teams from similar industries vying against each other to win their industry cup; Bolton’s Office National, Macneil Group, Red Lion Team 2, Prime7, Team of Extra Ordinary Gentlemen, Ballarat Toyota and Adroit Insurance all took home their trophies.

Unfortunately the incentive of a brand new Ford Kuga thanks to Eclipse Ford on offer there was no hole-in-one at hole 11 this year. No hole-in-one was recorded at hole 18 this year either, where 12 months of vouchers to the Red Lion Hotel was on offer, in fact those tossing golf balls over-arm got closer to the hole.

Of course, the biggest winner of the day was the Ballarat community, with all proceeds going to the work of United Way Ballarat. Geoff Sharp, CEO of United Way Ballarat, thanked each and every person in the room as he wound up proceedings for making the day a huge success, for being so generous and for helping to support the community of Ballarat.

Event sponsor David Canny of The Red Lion is enthusiastic about being involved with the annual event: ‘It is a privilege to be able to join forces with United Way Ballarat in hosting this event and being able to get behind something that is making a difference in the lives of local people.’
